My son did an internship for 3 months in Pennsylvania and he is a resident/student in Ohio. Will assume due to the agreement between states the W2 shows State Tax show OH as the state. He got some withholding for Local tax.  I needed to enter the W2 manually.  Which state should input in the local tax area?  Can State for state tax and the state for local tax be different?

Yes, the states can be different.  Some taxes are based on where you live and others on where you work.   You may need to confirm the locality and associated state with his employer.

State taxes go in Boxes 15-17

Local taxes go in Boxes 18-20

You can add multiple lines for boxes 18-20.    If there is an amount in box 19, that means that amount was withheld and sent to whatever locality is named in box 20.

  • box 18 is the base amount for the tax  (can be different or the same for each locality)
  • box 19 is the tax that was withheld
  • box 20 is the name of the locality (where your tax $ went to)

There is an + Another Locality button you can click on if you have multiple locality taxes withheld.
