Michigan Homestead Property Tax Credit - recently married

My son has owned and lived in his primary residence for over 3 years. He married a foreigner in November of 2023 and Turbo Tax is saying that he does not qualify for the tax credit because he hasn't lived in his home for 6 months or more. Is this a clitch in the system? I looked on the Michigan website in the instructions and cannot find any information on this scenario.

Does your son file married filing jointly with a spouse who is reporting an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number)?  According to the Michigan website, this situation does not appear to preclude your son from receiving the credit.

Information about the Michigan Homestead Property Tax Credit may be found here.

You may qualify for a property tax credit if all of the following apply:

    • You own or were contracted to pay rent and occupied a Michigan homestead for at least 6 months during the year on which property taxes and/or service fees were levied.  If you own your home, your taxable value was $154,400 or less (unless unoccupied farmland)
    • Your total household resources were $67,300 or less (part year residents must annualize total household resources to determine if a credit reduction applies)
    • Your total household resources do not consist solely of payments received from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

The Michigan Homestead Property Tax Credit can be found in the Michigan state income tax return at the screen Total Household Resources.

What information was reported under total household resources?  Did the taxpayer qualify for any of these household resources reported on the screen Any of these sources of household resources in the Michigan state income tax return?
