I am in process of filing an extension for MI tax return using Form 4, Application for Extension of Time to File Michigan Tax Returns. When I do the "Computation and Payment of Tax Due", should I take "exemption allowance" into account when calculating "Tax before credits"?

Yes. Exemptions are subtracted from your gross income to arrive at taxable income.

Michigan starts with federal adjusted gross income, then adds and subtracts state-specific additions and subtracts before deducting your exemption allowance to arrive at taxable income.

Your taxable income is used to compute your tax before credits.
