Question

Missouri resident working for Connecticut company

I live in Missouri and work remotely for a company based in Connecticut. I received two W2s this year from them, the second of which said it was a MO vs CT filing copy. Given I am 100% remote, do I still

have to file for CT? And can I get a credit on my MO return for any CT taxes paid?

Who Must File Form CT-1040NR/PY states that you must file if you had CT tax withheld or had CT source income. If you do have to file a CT return as a nonresident, the you can file for a credit with your MO return on any double taxed income.

Your MO return will automatically capture all income so be careful that your return shows the correct MO income. You can adjust wages in the w2 state section if needed. The federal and states already have their copy of the forms.

    Thanks!

I did not have any CT tax withholding, but my employer did give me both W2s for both CT and MO. Somehow they split my total earnings, which to me doesn’t make sense, given I am 100% remote. But I do have different W2s, which I assume means I must file in both states? And if I owe taxes to CT, will I get that credit for MO in my 2024 or 2025 filing?

If you had no CT source income, you wouldn't technically be required to file. However, since you have a W-2 with CT income showing, it may be best to file a CT return showing zero income being allocated. Otherwise, the state may be looking for a return based on what's been reported to them during the year.
