Missouri State E-filing and online pay

I live in Missouri, and I filed my taxes online.  I also chose to have the amount owed drawn out of my bank account. When I was finishing my filing, TurboTax said that I still need to mail in my voucher, even though I am paying by automatic withdrawal, and I filed online.  (I will literally just be mailing a voucher that has sensitive information on it--our SS numbers--and no payment.  All info will have already been received at the State level.)
Is this true, and why?

@robynjonh @scottsorensen I've shared your post with TurboTax Moderators.  They're on Pacific time, so it may be awhile before I hear anything.  I'm wondering if the issue isn't with the MO site?  Either way, I'll update you guys when I hear anything.

    Thank you for your patience!

@robynjonh That's just wonky.  As long as your state return has been accepted and you're CERTAIN that you schedule payment of your state tax liability by direct debit, you can disregard the voucher.  Sorry for the confusion.

Hi there, and thank you!  I guess according to the next reply, it might still be in question.  As far as being certain about the direct payment, all I know right now is that the program asked me to re-enter my bank information while doing the State stuff, which I had already entered for Federal, and I had to check and re-check, so one would think it was going to work.  If not, Intuit/Turbotax has a glitch they need to fix.  I sure wish a Turbotax professional would see this thread as well!
    Thanks for your input!

In the same boat with no clear answer yet. The Missouri revenue website says that “electronic software cannot submit payment” so I am waiting to see if my payment goes through later this week before mailing the voucher.

    Hi Scott,

Thank for your input!  That is so annoying, right?  I mean, we had to re-enter our bank information and re-check etc while doing our State stuff, so it would lead one to think it is a legit method...and I don't love the thought of sending something with both of our SS numbers in the snail mail in this day and age.  It was different in the way back but now... So, I guess we will see!

I am thankful for this thread.  Couldn't figure it out, either.  Set up payment for the 15th, so will have to wait and see if it hits my account, but you all make me feel better about it.

I also scheduled my payment to be withdrawn on 4/15, and here we are on 4/19 with no payment withdrawn.  Now the state is showing I owe a nonpayment penalty and interest.  I am NOT happy AT ALL.

I'm in the same boat but think the state may have processed the return but not the payment yet.  I still think if you approved the payment for 4/15 and your return was accepted (aka postmarked) by then that it should still get there "on time".  I'll give it a few more days to post before I start to panic. IRS just posted today and I had that approved for 4/15 as well (granted thet is also when I filed)

I am glad to read the debit should go through to pay my MO taxes, but concerned it has not been happening on the specified date.   I specified 4/14, and my federal was debited as scheduled but my state did not.    On 4/18, if it has not yet been debited, am I responsible for mailing another payment to not be considered late?  Or would they count my payment is on time since it was their fault for taking it late?     If I get penalized, will TurboTax fix it with MO?

First, glad I read all of this as I had similar questions.  Comparing my PDF files from 2020 to 2021, the 2020 form allowed direct deposit (credit) but not a payment (debit) of MO taxes due when electronically filing (you either had to send a check or go to the website) but 2021 it has the option for both debit and credit.  I almost made a payment on the website as some of you did but, based on everything I've read here, I feel confident that the payment made as part of the 2021 electronic filing should go through.  Thanks to all for the great posts!

As to the question on late payments, my understanding is that as long as you filed electronically before the deadline the payment will be "on time".  It is just like if you mail your return... as long as it is postmarked by the due date you are good to go!

This is the thread I've been looking for. Thank goodness!

I set up my Missouri payment to come out via Turbo Tax on 4/17, and it still hasn't come out of my account as of 4/21.  When I look up on the Missouri Return Tracker, it says my return has been validated, processed, and completed.  Should I remain patient to avoid double payment?  The Mo Tracker is also showing a late fee 😞

@arat18 I would not submit another payment.  This is the state of MO's issue and they will have to make it right.

You can pay through TurboTax. Verified here - https://dor.mo.gov/faq/taxation/individual/efile.html

Apparently, Intuit doesn't care about this bug.  People had this same issue a year ago. I submitted the information for electronic payment, yet, Turbotax Home & Business printed a payment voucher and stated that it must be submitted. So, I checked the summary sheet at the front of the State return, and it shows that the payment is to be paid from my bank (not in those words). I'm going to trust but verify. I will check my bank account to see that payment is withdrawn. We're dealing with Government, so I expect slow. I will wait at least a month.

The software has to follow state rules. Some states say you have to print a paper, sign it and keep it. Some say print a voucher, each state has their unique circumstances. While MO may choose to participate in the banking system, they might prefer it mailed or they may be thinking of a potential crash. I could not begin to guess why some of these rules exist.

MO should withdraw the money. You are right to give them plenty of time. If something odd happens and the money is not pulled from your account by the due date, pay them.

OK, the money was withdrawn from my account, so ignoring the Intuit instructions worked. The Intuit problem is that they are creating confusion. All it would take would be a notice that says that the voucher and payment MAY need to be made mailed IF the bank transfer does not happen. Currently, the indication given to me was that the form and payment MUST be made. That in my opinion is a software failure after paying for the fees to Intuit to get the state return filed and the money transfer done. If I followed Intuit instructions, I would have paid MO twice, and I suspect getting that straightened out with the state would take all eternity.

Please see this link for additional direction if your payment still has not be taken out.  There is a link to contact your state agency towards the bottom of the link if the payment is for your state return.
