Should my MT non-resident tax return transfer over ALL of my gross income from my federal return, even the money earned in another state.  I only have a rental income in MT, but the program seems to transfer all of my wife and my income for everything into the MT Gross Income box.   Shouldn't this just bee the gross income from my rental in MT?

Yes, your federal adjusted gross income transfers over to your Montana return, even income earned in another state.

According to Montana Taxable Income Calculation in the Instructions for Form 2:

Taxpayers will use their federal taxable income as the base for calculating their Montana taxable income.  Montana's current system uses the federal adjusted gross income as the base for determining Montana taxable income.

For a nonresident, tax is prorated based on the ratio of their Montana-source income to their Montana adjusted gross income.
