Turbotax suggests that we file our Montana State return " married filing combined separate".   Do I need to separate the capital gains amount between us, or leave it under one spouse?  These are joint accounts for the most part that we have earned capital gains on.  Also the same question for itemized deductions. federal income tax refunds, real estate taxes and itemized deductions.

Yes, since Montana is not a community property state, you may allocate capital gains,  itemized deductions. federal income tax refunds, real estate taxes and itemized deductions in any manner of your choosing.
