I moved from Virginia to DC January 1st of 2024. I did not live in Virginia at all in 2024. However, my work was not able to update my address in their pay system until February. I was taxed in Virginia for a month and a half. How can I get the Virginia taxes back? Do I need to adjust my DC taxes as it did not switch over until February.

You need to file Virginia Non-resident state return to claim refund for taxes paid.

When preparing a nonresident return solely to recover erroneous tax withholdings, enter 0 on the screen that asks for the amount of income earned in that state. This will eliminate your tax liability for that state, resulting in a full refund.

Prepare your non-resident state return first.  On your DC resident state return you might have tax due since you didn't have any withholding for January 2024. You don't need to adjust your DC withholdings if your employer is withholding enough taxes for DC in 2025.

How do I file a nonresident state return?
