Question

Moved temporarily to my current state for work (spent 5.5 months there in 2017) and plan to move back to my home state June 1st (i.e., 6 months into 2018). How do I file?

Also, I filled out the credit for paying taxes in the state I work in to my home state, but it didn't change my state tax amount (i.e., my resident state taxes me for income I made and was already taxed for by the state I work in).

You will file as a Part-Year Resident of your former home state, and a Part-Year resident of your current state.

In 2018, you will do the reverse:  Part-Year Resident of your current state and a Part-Year Resident of the state you move to.

The TurboTax software decides what states to file based on your entries in My Info.  If you return to the section My Info - found in the left bar - and then choose Edit by your name, the second section is titled "Tell us the state(s) you lived in."

The first question is your State of residence (on December 31, 2017), and then there is a radio button for I lived in another state in 2017.  You want to be sure it is marked Yes, so you can enter your Previous state of residence (where you lived before moving).
