I moved to Minnesota in February from Wisconsin. I forgot to update my W4 with my work until now (December). I kept my same job which is located in Minnesota and previously I had to file as a non resident while living in Wisconsin. Will the date I changed my W4 effect how I file taxes next year? and how do I file?

For tax year 2024, you'll file a part-year resident return in each of the two states.  Your income prior to the move will be taxable by both MN and WI; your income after the move will be taxable only by MN.  On your part-year WI return, you'll be able to claim a credit for the taxes paid to MN on that portion of your income.

How do I file a part-year state return?

On your W4, you should have taxes withheld only for MN.

    Q.  Will the date I changed my W4 effect how I file taxes next year?

    A.  No.  It may affect how much refund you get back from WI and how much you have to pay MN, but even that is unlikely.
