I am getting an error on the Mississippi tax return stating that MS charitable contribution credit earned cannot exceed $800. I have checked MS website and this is the minimum, not maximum. I have tried hard keying on the form and running through the step by step continue to get the error message.

Where do you read that $800 is the minimum and not the maximum?

A Mississippi DOR website says: "Credit for Contributions to Qualifying Charitable Organizations (QCO)

An income tax credit is available for voluntary cash contributions from individuals made to a QCO. The amount of the credit is limited to the lesser of four hundred dollars ($400) or the amount of the contribution in any taxable year for a single individual or a head of household, or the lesser of eight hundred dollars ($800) or the amount of the contribution in any taxable year for a married couple filing a joint return."

This means that the most a married couple can get as a credit is $800, because if your contribution was more than $800, then "$800" would be the lesser of the two.
