Your tax return is the form you send to the government that shows your income and calculates your tax. The money the government sends back to you is your refund. The government does not send your return to you. You send your return to the government. After you do that, the government sends your refund to you.

Look at the West Virginia Form IT-140 that you filed. Did you receive the refund amount shown on line 26? If so, why do you think it's incorrect? If you received less than the amount on line 26, you should get a letter from the West Virginia Tax Division explaining the change. You might not get the letter until several weeks after you received the refund. If you do not get a letter, call the Tax Division at 304-558-3333 or 800-982-8297 and ask them why your refund was reduced.

You said "I only work in West Virginia." Do you mean that you live in a different state? What state do you live in?

Which box is checked at the top of the Form IT-140, below your name and address? Is the Nonresident/Part Year Resident box checked?

West Virginia has reciprocal agreements with several states. If you live in Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, or Virginia, do you have any income from West Virginia other than wages on a W-2? If you live in one of those states and your only income from West Virginia is wages on a W-2, the Nonresident Special box should be checked at the top of Form IT-140.
