Question

My company reported wages to NJ in error. I live and work in CT. I have asked for a W2c but have not gotten one. How do I file my state taxes?

We'd love to help you complete your tax return but need more information. Can you please clarify your question?

I first suggest that you have a conversation with your employer and/or the payroll department.

  • Since you live & work in CT, is there a reason that your employer withheld NJ taxes?
  • On your W-2, does it show NJ in box 15, and does it show State wages in box 16 on the same line?
  • IUs there any indication of CT in Box 15?

I know this does not completely answer your question, please contact us again and provide some additional details.

My company has a terminal in NJ - I'm a truck driver. I only worked out of the CT terminal as I live in CT. There are NJ and CT wages shown in box 15 and 16- there was a period of 2 months wages reported in error before I caught it. I have talked to HR and have asked for a corrected W2 two months ago but have not received anything. My question is how do I file my state taxes? Do I do a nonresident for NJ? What income do I report for NJ and CT ? Any help is appreciated thanks.

Yes, you will file a non-resident tax return for NJ and a resident tax return for CT. First, review your entries in the Personal Info Section and make sure that you enter that you made money in NJ so TurboTax will prompt you to complete a non-resident tax return for NJ. Follow the steps below to do this:

  1. Launch Turbo Tax and select Personal Info
  2. Personal info summary screen will pop up.
  3. Scroll down to Other State Income and select Edit
  4. Check your answer for Did you make money in any other states? Answer the questions stating that you made money in NJ and select Continue.

Once you complete your Federal tax return and move to the state returns, you will see a non-resident tax return for NJ and a resident tax return for CT. Complete the NJ tax return first. When you get to the interview screen to allocate your income for NJ, enter $0 because NJ should not tax any of your income. You should get a refund from NJ for any withholdings. When you complete your CT tax return, you will enter all of your income for CT since that is your resident state. You may end up owing a balance due to CT.
