Question

My former employer kept my old address on file after I moved from NE to CO, so taxes were erroneously withheld from the same income in both states. How do I get a refund?

My W-2 and pay stubs show that I was paying taxes to both NE and CO for three months after I relocated, even though I was no longer working or living in Nebraska. My former employer refused to correct its records and my W-2, so I filed for an extension and paid the back taxes to NE that Turbo Tax estimated based on my incorrect W-2. When I file my NE return, can I simply adjust my taxable wages to the correct amount that I calculated, or do I need to fill out an additional form and provide proof of residence in CO? How do I get a refund for the amount that I paid to NE when I filed my extension?

You will be filing partial year returns for each of those states.  Enter the information from your W-2 showing the amounts withheld for each state just as the W-2 appears. TurboTax will calculate your tax and/or refund for the states.  You will be able to indicate on your return how long you lived in each of the states, and TT will use those dates.

When you requested your extension you were supposed to pay your estimated tax due.  Did you enter the payment you made into your tax return?  Go to Federal>Deductions and Credits>Estimates and Other Taxes Paid>Other Income Taxes  This will show up on line 17 of your Form 1040
