You will be able to add the cost of the assisted living facility as a medical expense on her tax return. Assisted living expenses qualify as deductible medical expenses when the resident is chronically ill and care is provided according to an established plan prescribed by a licensed healthcare provider.

Medical, dental, and vision expenses are reported on Schedule A and entered in the Deductions & Credits section.

  1. With your return open, search for Schedule A and then select the Jump to link in the search results.
  2. Enter your medical expenses, starting with prescriptions, on the following screens.
