Question

My NY' company's W2 reported my State income to NY and my parents' state NJ at my parents' address while I lived in CT. Can I file this income to my CT state income?

Can I skip to file NJ state tax if I don't care about the few $ withholding?

Yes, if you did not work in New Jersey, you do not have to file the New Jersey tax return.

Thank you, Mary, for the quick answer. But employee information on W2 is my name at my parents' NJ address, and the box 15 State is NJ with Wages in box16. Can I just write this wage to my CT resident state income and NJ won't get me in trouble in the future? (I did not work in NJ; I have other W2s with correct CT state information). Thank you!

The correct thing to do is file a NJ return to get a refund of taxes withheld. I recommend you file the NJ so they don't think there is a bigger problem and you end up in an investigation over a few dollars.

Your resident state of CT will tax all income and give you a credit for the NY tax you will pay. NY nonresident income is based on source income. See Nonresidents: New York source income.
