Question

My state return was $1042 and I received a direct deposit for 603 and it says MD state tax return. Why is the amount different?

There are various reasons why your refund is less than expected. See the information below.  I suggest you contact the MD Department of Revenue for an explanation at 1-800-MDTAXES.

  • Missing dollar amounts may be caused by a refund offset. This is when the government applies part or all of your refund towards your past-due income tax, child or spousal support, student loans, or state unemployment compensation debts.
  • The government may have made a correction to your tax return, resulting in a lower (or higher!) than anticipated refund.. You'll get an official explanatory letter when this happens.
