Question

My tax witholdings were made for Missouri but I live in Kentucky, how do I get a full refund in Missouri?

I know I need to complete a non-resident form for Missouri first, and then fill out a form for Kentucky (where I lived for the entire year of 2020). But when I fill out the Missouri form and report zero income for 2020, I don't get any refund. How do I fix this so that I get my incorrectly paid taxes to the state back so that I can pay it to Kentucky?

When you entered your wages in the federal input section, make sure your state wages are reported as being from Missouri along with the taxes withheld for Missouri.

Go to the Federal section of the program.

    1. Select Income & Expenses
    2. Select Job (W-2)
    3. Click Edit/Add to the right of the Job (W-2)
    4. Proceed to enter your information as prompted
    5. When you get to the state input section in boxes 15-17, make sure it is reported here exactly as it is reported on your W-2 Form.

    State taxes

You will make any other adjustment directly in the state interview section to reflect that $0 was actually earned in Missouri.

This should result in a refund for those taxes withheld in Missouri.
