Question

My wife and I live in separate states. I live in Indiana and she lives in Massachuttes. I filed our federal return jointly, also filed Indiana.

Now I wanted to file her MA state return separately as "married filing separately". Is MA law allows this ? (filing state return separate even if you filed federal together). and is there any way to only file state on turbo tax? I previously read that I can not maybe e-file but get the papers and send the state by mail, is this correct?

Yes, Massachusetts state law does allow a different filing status than what was used for the federal return.

From the state of Massachusetts:

"Your Massachusetts filing status may differ from that allowed on your federal return."

Please read this for more details on married filing separately.

It is possible to file a Massachusetts state return with online if an account is set up first.
