The 5 digit pin is a number you created last year when you e-filed your return.   To e-file this year's return, you need EITHER the 5 digit pin you created last year (you create a new one each time you e-file) OR last year's AGI number - you do not need both.    The 5 digit pin you created last year is not recorded anywhere unless you wrote it down, so it is probably easier to use last year's AGI number if you don't remember the pin you used last year.

There is a 6 digit IP pin that only some taxpayers need - the IRS issues those in identity theft situations.   Don't confuse those 2 pins.   Most people do not have an IP PIN.

You actually do need both.  It will not let me continue without putting my 5 digit self select pin.

The 5 digit e-filing PIN is required to electronically file your tax return.  You choose a 5 digit e-filing PIN the first time you e-file, and use it every year thereafter.

If you don't remember it, you can use your AGI (adjusted gross income) from last year's tax return.  This is found on line 11 of last year's IRS form 1040 tax return.

This is not true. My wife has entered her 5 digit Pin. We have entered the AGI. I have tried many options on my Pin including leaving it blank. Turbo Tax keeps rejecting our taxes.
