I have a 1099-R this year from my Roth 401k account.  I took a distribution from my contributions.  The 1099-R is coded with J.  When i did my federal taxes, I was able to put in my past contributions and it picked up that my distribution was taken from principle and not growth, no issues.  But NJ automatically put the distribution as income, incorrectly.  How do i enter the 1099-R for NJ so that it doesn't add to my income.

New Jersey will treat 1099-R's with code J in box 7 as a non-qualified distribution (income).

You can either get the 1099 reissued to show as a qualified distribution (code Q).

OR

If this is the first withdrawal from the Roth take the following steps in TurboTax

Go into the NJ return

  • Come to the page Roth Distribution for You Hit continue
  • On the page IRA Information for You select yes
  • This will open a box for total of IRA Contributions Previously Taxed enter your contributions here.
