Question

Not sure if I’m filing as Californian resident but I moved to WA with same employer. How can I ensure I’m not paying CA state tax for WA and can get fund if paying ?

Good News, TurboTax will ensure that you file these returns correctly.  To do that, start by adding your State of California Return.  There will be a series of questions on your residency and will make a recommendation on your filing status with the State of California.

Generally, you must file an income tax return for California if you’re a resident, part-year resident, or a non-resident  and:

  • Are required to file a federal return
  • Receive income from a source in California
  • Have income above a certain amount

Please see the State of California Filing Requirements for more information.

The State of Washington does not charge any state income taxes, but you are still required to file a federal income tax return by April 15. Washington may also require you pay taxes on goods purchased out of state (use tax). Washington also levies property taxes as well as business and occupation taxes.
