Question

NY nonresident income allocation of 0

I am a resident of IL and work for a company with offices in IL and NY.  I usually work some number of days in the NY office, my company withholds NY taxes, and I normally file a NY nonresident tax return and use the percent method to allocate my income to NY.

For 2020, due to the pandemic, I did not travel and did not work any days in the NY office.  I am entering zero for 2020's percent of income allocation, which TurboTax seems to allow.  However, when trying to file the NY tax return, TurboTax will not allow my return to be submitted saying NY will not accept a zero income allocation.

I can't be the only person with this issue.  Is this a bug?  I'm trying to get a refund for my 2020 NY tax withholding.  How can I do this if I can't submit a return with a zero income allocation?  Thank you.

New York taxes on all income earned from New York sources.  If you are not considered to have any New York sourced income, you will need to contact your employer as your W-2 Form may need to be corrected.

Otherwise, if you may need to allocate your wages based upon work that your employer considered to have been earned from New York sources.
