Paid estimated CA taxes due early - owe less money at filing

Hello,

I (W2) paid the estimated taxes I thought was due to CA on 4/15 to prevent interest and penalties. I paid this directly on the FTB website. I am now filing on turbo tax and being shown options to pay the taxes.

1. How do I show Turbotax that I have already paid this so I can move forward with filing
2. How do I get a refund for the overpayment from CA (~$900)

Thank you!

Oh on 4/15/24 it was too late to make an estimated payment so you probably make an Extension payment.

To enter the amount you paid with an extension (including state extension) go to

Federal Taxes (or Personal for desktop H&B version)

Deductions and Credits

Then scroll way down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid

Other Income Taxes - Click the Start or Update button

Next page second section Payments with Extension

Either Visit All or Click Start or Update by the extension you paid

You paid a 540ES estimated payment?  or a payment with an extension to file?

To enter Federal or State Estimated Taxes Paid, including a state estimated payment made in January for the prior year, go to

Federal on left or at top (Personal for Home & Business)

Deductions and Credits

Then scroll way down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid

Estimated - click the Start or Update button

You enter state estimated payments under the federal side (because they can be a federal itemized Deduction). THEN after you finish filling out the estimates under Federal you need to click on the State Tab at the top and start the state return over for it to update.

You have to pick the right state from the drop down box and enter the right payment dates.

Thank you - I will try that.

To clarify - I filed an extension for federal taxes but CA gives automatic extension until Oct 15, so I just paid the estimated taxes due (that was showing in turbo tax) directly on ftb.ca.gov. Now that I have completed the tax return in turbotax, it's showing a lower amount due than what I paid on the ftb site.

Hope this clarifies the question.

Sounds like extension payment is the way to enter it.
