Hi,

I lived in DC and VA for year 2021, when I’m filling out information about my state taxes, I got asked this below. Should I put the income I received when I lived in VA even if VA and DC have reciprocal agreements?

Thank you for your help!

Subtractions From Federal Income, Part-year
Enter any income received while residing outside DC. If none, enter zero.

You would allocate your income to the state in which you lived for the income earned while living there.

Reciprocal means the state in which you live receives the tax for that income.

    Hi,

thanks for the reply. But the field asks for the amount in the state where I live outside of DC. So should I put VA income in 2021 in that field then?

Where did you work? Did your work in D.C. all year? Or did you change jobs and work in Virginia when you moved?

The part-year D.C. return starts will federal income which includes all your income for the entire year. You only pay tax on the amount you earned while a D.C. resident so subtract income received after you moved out of D.C.

Someone would need to look at your W-2 to answer your question. You have not provided enough information.
