I was working on the taxes and in the state portion it asked for the property index number of the primary house.  I didn't have it at the time and went to get it.  Now I can't find where to enter it.  Any help would be appreciated.

Without knowing what state you are dealing with, I can't be too specific. However, since it sounds like you are dealing with a property tax credit, you would look in your state return section for something like Deductions and Credits and then look for a credit or deduction referencing property taxes.

The property index number is needed to claim the Illinois property tax credit. In the Illinois section, look for Credit for Property Taxes. You will next see a Property Information screen. Fill in your County and your Property Index Number.

The Illinois Property Tax Credit is a credit on your individual income tax return equal to 5 percent of Illinois Property Tax (real estate tax) you paid on your principal residence. You must own and reside in your residence in order to take this credit.

For tax years beginning on or after January 1, 2017, the Illinois Property Tax Credit is not allowed if a taxpayer's federal Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) exceeds $500,000 for returns with a federal filing status of married filing jointly, or $250,000 for all other returns.
