Question

Received Unemployment in AZ but Live in IL

I moved to IL in 2023. For that year, I filed state taxes for AZ and IL because I had previous employment income and unemployment income for half the year in AZ. In 2024, I had no employment in AZ, only IL. But I did receive 4 months of unemployment from AZ. Do I need to fill out an AZ state income tax form for 2024? From other posts in this forum, it looks like I might not need to because of the amount I received. I didn't receive a 1099-G from AZ, but that could have been because they didn't have my updated address. Federal taxes were taken out of my unemployment income but I don't believe state taxes were.

Yes, you need to file a non-resident tax return for Arizona to claim the unemployment income.

You will then file a full-year resident state return for Illinois.

Illinois will tax you on all your income, but credit you for the tax you pay to Arizona, so please do the Arizona return first (so TurboTax can compute the Illinois credit).

You will need to contact the state of Arizona for a copy of the 1099-G, I assume it is available online.
