Hello,

I currently live in MA but i have a rental property in CA.  I lived for 4 months in MA and 8 months in CA.

in CA state tax, it asked how much of the rental income counted towards CA.  so i picked 8/12 * total income for CA.

but in MA state tax form, it only has options of including the whole income or exclude it all? I can't put a proportion.

how should i include this rental income for both in this case?

thanks.

It's all California income. Even after you moved to MA, the property (physically located in CA) continued to generate CA source income

thank you.  so i should exclude this property income from MA state tax?

but turboTax MA state tax says this for part-year residents:

this includes income earned in other states as well (rental property income, your share of income from business located in other states, etc.)

so should i include this rental income, but do some deduction ? which i dont know how.

    Q. So I should exclude this property income from MA state tax?

    A. Yes, The rental income attributable to the time you lived in MA, is taxable by MA.  Since it is also taxable by CA, MA will give you a credit, or partial credit, for the tax you paid to CA, for that time period.
