Question

Residency Unique Situation - Iowa Resident, but worked and lived in Washington for 2020.

I am encountering an issue with TurboTax regarding residency.

I indicate my state of residence as Iowa since I meet the requirements. TurboTax automatically pulled Washington from my previous tax filings since that is my permanent address (parents home address). The next prompt asks if I lived in Iowa for all of 2020, which I did not since I went back home to Washington due to COVID, but TurboTax then asks me when I moved and the prior state I lived in before moving. I have not moved to Washington and I have only lived in Iowa. If someone can help me clear up this issue, I would greatly appreciate it.

To change your resident state:

  • Go to My Info in the left column.
  • Click Edit next to your name.
  • Scroll down to Tell us the state(s) you lived in
  • Change Washington to Iowa
  • Make sure NO is checked beneath "I lived in another state in 2020"
