When Entering RMD 1099-R for 2018 QCD – Works OK on Fed, No Impact on NJ Return

I entered the 1099-R for the RMD, and was prompted with questions regarding money disposition.  Question asked and Answered YES about contributing to a Charity. IRA/SEP.SIMPLE box was checked on Traditional IRA 1099-R.

  • Worked fine on Federal, using 7 Normal Distribution. $$$ in Boxes 1 and 2a.
  • Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) did NOT carry through to New Jersey State return using two different methods, based on my Turbo Tax “FIND”:
    • Failed using 7 Normal Distribution
    • Failed using “F” Charitable Gift Annuity.   TurboTax Message: Doesn’t usually apply to IRAs.

QCD should impact NJ Return.  Right? ... Especially when it drives Gross Income down to <$100k which then kicks in a $60k exclusion ( in 2018).

Is there a tested work-around to correct this issue, or something else that I need to do?

A QCD does not affect the New Jersey tax return. New Jersey does not allow a deduction for a QCD. (For that matter, New Jersey does not allow any deduction for charitable contributions.)

TurboTax is working correctly. There is nothing to fix or to work around.
