Should a nonresident spouse be included on a resident alien taxpayer's application for automatic extension of time to file a federal tax return.

The taxpayer is extending his return until he can pass the substantial presence test (so he can file as a resident alien).  His spouse has not yet applied for a federal ID # and did not earn any income in the USA in 2016.

No, there is no need to include the non-resident spouse on a resident alien taxpayer's application for automatic extension of time to file a federal tax return. The non-resident spouse is not required to file a tax return, and the  resident alien taxpayer does not have to declare a filing status (MFS, MFJ) with the request for extension.
