My mother received a 1099R showing 11 months pension earnings in one State (VA) and one month pension in KY.  She was a KY resident for the full 12 months but her record was not changed until Nov.  How do I go about reporting the total income in KY and none in VA?

Your mom should file VA non-resident state return to receive a refund for taxes withheld.

To ensure accurate calculations, always complete the non-resident return first.

Make sure you've filled out the Personal Info section correctly:

    1. With your return open, select My Info in the menu.
    2. On the Personal info summary screen, scroll down to Other State Income, and select Edit.
    3. At the Did you make money in any other states? question, answer Yes and make sure your nonresident state(s) are selected from the drop-down.

On your VA return, it will show your federal income and ask you to allocate what is sourced in that state, you will say 0

On your KY return, it will show your federal income and ask you to allocate what is sourced in that state, and you can select all.

How do I file a nonresident state return?
