State Income Taxes paid to a state I didn't live in

Here's a bit of an odd situation.

In September of 2020, I transferred and moved with my company from Louisiana to Florida. For all of 2021, I lived in Florida and made no money or income outside the Florida. My company made a clerical error and, despite having me listed as being stationed in Florida, continued to take money from my paycheck for Louisiana Income Tax.

I noticed in about October if I recall correctly. I contacted my company's representative on the issue and they were able to refund me the money for the then current quarter that had been taken out but had already paid the previous quarters to Louisiana. They then informed me I'd have to file a Louisiana Income Tax Return to get all the money back.

I have attempted to file a Louisiana return with Turbo Tax but it didn't acknowledge the strange situation and only wanted to return about 25% of what I paid. I encountered the same issue when I tried to file directly online with the state of Louisiana, but to no avail. With all that said, there is no guidance on Turbo Tax/Intuit that I've seen that can help. I haven't even been able to find advice on other random webpages. If anyone has any idea how to handle this situation, I'd be very thankful.

Thank you for your time.

In order to get all of the withholding back from any state when it has been withheld in error, a non-resident return with zero income attributed to that state is generally what gets the job done.

Double-check your entries for the Louisiana return and be sure that you have indicated that there is no income tied to Louisiana.  The return is probably picking up information from your W-2 that shows it as Louisiana income.

You should see a Louisiana Income Allocation page where you can change the amount to '0' to show that none of your income was from Louisiana.
