State tax

I bought TurboTax Deluxe Software from Costco while in FL. I assumed it included one state; but no.

I had to pay $45 to download NJ state tax software. I assumed it included filing. But for filing, it is asking me another $25.

I am confused. What did I pay $45 for?

Yeah...you have to be careful when you buy Deluxe at a store.

There are "cheaper" Deluxe desktop/CD versions that come without a free state software  set.    Those Deluxe versions are primarily for the people who do not have a state to file....Like full-time FL residents with no income from other states.  i.e. they don't have to pay for state software they will never use.

Gotta read the front of the boxes carefully.

Some say "Federal + State"

Others just say "Federal"

And as for the $25 state e-file fee

STATE E-FILE FEE FOR CD/DWNLOAD

Lots of people misunderstand this.   When you buy the CD/download with a state return included --- it includes the software to PREPARE  the returns of the specific state of your choosing.   There is always---always---an extra fee to e-file the state return.   Before March 1 that state e-file fee is $20; after March 1 it increases to $25.  You can avoid the state e-file fee if you print and mail the state instead.  Then you just need to pay for a stamp.
