Question

State tax numbers don't match federal

I sold a rental property and the state tax gain is wildly wrong, about double what it should be.  There are several places where the numbers entered in the worksheets seem to come from nowhere.  Similar state and federal worksheets have some numbers the same, others appear to be random.  I tried to back out of the state return altogether and start it over but it won't let me.

It is not uncommon for state and federal numbers to differ for the sale of a rental property or other sales of assets.  This is often due to differences in the way depreciation is handled at the state and federal level.

However, I can't tell if that's the case for your situation or not.

If you have already paid or "registered" your product you can delete the state return by either clicking delete beside the state or selecting "delete state" from the forms menu for users of the desktop/download product.  This may be what you have already tried to reset the calculations and there are times when it's not possible.

If you can give us some more information about which numbers are different and where you are seeing them we may be able to offer more assistance.
