I was a grad student last year living in MD but my residency was VA. I am not a dependent and my income was only from MD from a graduate assistantship position. Who do I file state taxes with?

You can file and report the income in Virginia because there s a reciprocal agreement between VA and MD (if you work in the nonresident state, you can report the income in your resident state only).  However, if you had Maryland withholding, you would have to file a nonresident Maryland return to get the withholding refunded.
