Question

States taxes incorrect for North Carolina and Florida

Why is North Carolina requiring states taxes paid for income earned in Florida? It appears North Carolina is trying to require taxes after inputting Florida income. There is no state income tax for income in Florida. There must be an error.

If you are a North Carolina resident, you must pay the income tax on all income regardless of where you earned it.  Usually you would get a credit for the taxes you pay to the nonresident states that you work and file taxes in, but because Florida does not have an income tax you do not get the credit.

You know that makes no sense. Why give North Carolina money that was earned in another state? That is free money which should be illegal.

Residents of every state are taxed on worldwide income. The same applies to the IRS. North Carolina will normally give you a credit for income taxed by another state to stop double taxation, but since Florida has no income tax there is no credit because there is no double-taxed income.
