Question

System won't let me file unless I fill in random lines of "Sch SE-S". How to fill in / get this information?

I have a form 1099 -NEC which I think triggered a self employment tax (Sch SE-S). I thought turbo tax would automatically calculate or fill in this information for me but its asking me to fill in random lines (8 and 22 I think of the form Sch SE-S

Did you go through the self employment section and create a Schedule C?  This will also produce a Schedule SE automatically.

You will need to enter the information in both Form 1099-NEC and Schedule C sections.  You would start from the 1099-NEC section under "1099-MISC and Other Common Income".  You would then follow prompts to tell the program you are filing a Schedule C.  As it creates a Schedule C for you, you will need to go to the Schedule C portion separately to confirm your income amount, add related expenses and complete required information.  The program will then create a Schedule SE for your self employment tax.

In TurboTax online, here are the steps:

  • Sign into your account, select Pick up where you left off
  • From the upper right menu, select Search and type in 1099nec and Enter
  • Select the Jump to 1099nec
  • Follow prompts to complete the section

Then

  • From the upper right menu, select Search and type in schedule c and Enter
  • Select the Jump to schedule c
  • Next screen, "Your 2020 work summary" under your self employed business, select Review
  • Continue to enter related expenses and other required information

Generally, most taxpayers who receive a Form1099-NEC are considered as self employed by the IRS and required to pay self-employment tax.  You will need to file a Schedule C reporting both income and any related expenses.  You will also need to file a Schedule SE to pay your self-employment tax.  If you received the form for a non-self employment income, you will enter it as Other Income on your Form 1040.  Follow the prompts in the TurboTax program and it will take you there.  To learn more, click here: 1099-NEC

For me, the questions it's tripping up on are in part III of Sch SE-S. I don't want to defer any taxes, and have read other threads that say to leave this section with all zeros. Unfortunately, when I go to file and pay my taxes, TurboTax won't efile them because of this. What is the resolution?

Thanks

The resolution is to update the program that you wish to decline any deferral.

The self-employment tax deferral section must be updated to resolve the errors. When the section was initially completed, you may have not been in a refund position. However, once you were eligible for a refund, this section needed to update.

Option 1:

Leaving this field completely blank is an option. The system can update with leaving this field blank. As always, it can be useful to close out of your program and close the browser window completely. Re-open in Chrome.

If you are still experiencing unexpected results, then try Option 2.

Option 2:

You can recalculate the deferral by temporarily recalculating this section by adding more income. Otherwise, without any adjustments, you may not get back to the same screens.

To return to the interview section to adjust these entries and un-trigger any deferral that you no longer want, follow these steps:

Enter a temporary amount as income in the self-employment section that will result in you not having a refund.

  1. From the left menu, select Federal.
  2. From the Income & Expenses, scroll to Self-employment income & expenses and Edit/Add.
  3. At Your 2020 work summary, select Edit.
  4. Under INCOME, select Add income for this work.
  5. Add Other self-employed income, includes 1099-K, cash, and checks and Continue.
  6. At Type of income, enter Temp income to remove deferral and enter a large amount, such as $100,000 and Continue.

Decline to defer any self-employment tax.

  1. From the left menu, click on Federal.
  2. Click the second tab from the left, Deductions & Credits.
  3. Scroll down to Tax Relief related to Covid-19 and Revisit.
  4. Select Self-employment tax deferral and select Revisit.
  5. Answer Yes at the next screen to get back to Let's start by getting your eligible income.
    1. Enter 280/366ths of your actual income to reflect the income from March 27-December 31, 2021.
      1. This amount should be the same as the correct amount on Line 18 of Sch SE.
  6. Select Continue.
  7. At Tell us how much you'd like to defer
    1. Enter 0.

Remove the temporary income.

  1. From the left menu, select Federal.
  2. From the Income & Expenses, scroll to Self-employment income & expenses and Edit/Add.
  3. At Your 2020 work summary, select Edit.
  4. Under INCOME, select the Trash can icon next to Temp income to remove deferral and Continue.
