Even though you can only designate two states of residence in the Personal Info or My Info section of TurboTax, you can file state tax returns with TurboTax in more than two states.  You may want to check the residency requirements for each state that you lived in, as if the time in the state was short, it could be deemed a temporary stay and you would then file a return as a non-resident (if you earned income in that state while staying there.)  Here is a link to state tax websites to find out residency requirements (for filing a part-year resident versus non-resident return):  How do I contact my state Department of Revenue?

To add another state in TurboTax Online - take the following steps:

  • Click on "State" located in your Menu Bar located on the left-hand side of your screen
  • Click "Continue"
  • On the next screen, you should see the state(s) you already have, click "Add Another State"
  • From the drop-down choose the third state you want to add

To add another state in TurboTax Download/CD versions - take the following steps:

  • Click the "Online" tab located in the top black bar of your screen
  • Select "Download State"
  • You will be brought to a product purchase screen, where you can select the state software you want to purchase.

Below are Help links for filing part-year resident returns, non-resident returns, plus how to allocate income between state returns:
