If you're a teacher in Virginia using TurboTax, the educator expense deduction is up to $300 for federal taxes and $600 if married filing jointly (MFJ), and up to $500 for Virginia.

    To enter Educator's Expenses TurboTax:

    1. Be sure you are logged into TurboTax for the links to work.
    2. Ensure you have listed yourself as a full-time resident of VA in the "About Me" section.
    3. Click on "Education Expenses" and enter all of your educator expenses. If your expenses exceed $500, enter the total amount.
    4. TurboTax will guide you through the rest of the questions to help ensure you receive the $300 for federal and the $500 for Virginia.
