It depends.

There are several areas in the program where there could be an input issue.  I recommend going through your input as follows to ensure all of your state input is reflected correctly.

  1. Log back into your TurboTax account.
  2. Select Personal Info and then select Review/Edit.
  3. Scroll through the entries under the page titled "your personal info" for you and your spouse.
  4. Be sure to check the input under the State of residence as well as whether you have marked the box yes or no under the question asking "I lived in another state in 2023."  If you only resided in one state, the box should be checked no.

If your entries are all correct here, please proceed to review any wages entered under the Wages & Income section of the program.

  1. Select edit/add to the right of Job (W-2).
  2. Select each applicable W-2 form and select edit to review the input fields.
  3. Review the entries under State taxes, boxes 15-17 to ensure you have entered the correct state.
  4. You may need to review this for any other income areas as applicable to your tax return.

Finally, review your entries in the state interview section of the program.

  1. Click State taxes and then prepare state.
  2. This will allow you to review any state returns here.  If you and your spouse only have activity from Maryland, you should only have a Maryland return listed.  If you have more than one state listed, you should ensure that the state return is not applicable.  If the state does not apply, select the trash can to the right of the state to delete the state as shown in the image below.

Finally, proceed through the state interview section for Maryland.  Review each answer to ensure all questions are answered accurately.  This should help resolve the error message.
