TurboTax Desktop Client not recognizing part-time resident status

Last year, I worked in NYC and lived in NJ for 8.5 months, and then moved and worked permanently in CA for the remaining 3.5 months. However, on the TurboTax Desktop client, I am marked as a Full-Time NJ resident and getting marked as having not paid my state taxes on the money I earned in CA, money which I have already paid CA State Taxes.

How do I manually override the application to denote that I was a part-year resident in NJ from Jan 1 to mid September and then part-year resident in CA from mid September to Dec 31?

To get TurboTax to correctly identify your states of residency during 2019, return to the Personal Info section and "Edit" the first section.

You select California as the "State of Residence", and then select the "Yes" button next to "lived in another state in 2019".  When you select Yes, you will get two more questions:  "Previous state of residence" and "Date you became a resident of your new state".  Answer accordingly and TurboTax will "set up" the correct state tax returns.

Note that during the preparation of both part-year resident tax returns, you may be required to manually input the assignment of income between New Jersey and California.
