I received a rebate of $400 for me and my spouse ($200 each) from Virginia because I filed a 2022 Virginia tax return and I had a tax liability.   I could not find a place in TurboTax to enter the rebate.  Is the $400 taxable and if so where do I enter it in my return?

Did you take the standard deduction in 2022?

If you took the standard deduction, you won’t need to take any action on your federal return related to the rebate.

If you itemized your deductions, you may be required to report the rebate amount you received as income on your federal return, depending on your circumstances. You’ll receive a Form 1099G, just like you would if you received a state tax refund.

    Virginia Department of Taxation

If you itemized your deduction. report the 1099-G form on your return:

    1. Select Federal Taxes (in Home & Business, select Personal).
    2. Select Wages & Income (in Home & Business, select Personal Income).
    3. Select I'll choose what I work on.
    4. Scroll down to 1099-MISC and Other Common Income.
    5. Select Start or Update for State and Local Tax Refunds on Form 1099-G.
