Question

Virginia State tax Filing after Federal is completed

I have filed my Fed Tax a couple weeks ago.  I now want to file my state.  When I load TurboTax Premier, I am at the Analysis Tab.  I back up to "File" and it starts with Efile my Fed Tax (which I have already done).  I am afraid to hit "continue".  Will TurboTax realize that I have done my Fed and advance to my state tax filing WITHOUT refiling my Fed Tax?

Secondly, I know I can pay to efile my state but if I decide to print out and mail it in, how do I know which forms are required to do my state or does TurboTax choose all forms for me?

Thanks so much.  I've been a TurboTax user for the last 7 years.  Great product!!!

I believe that you are working with the desktop version of TurboTax that is installed on a computer.  When you file just the state, you will need to change the federal to print to mail.  Then it will not try to file the federal return again.  Then you can e-file your state.

If you decide to print and mail your state return, the first page of the printed return will be a cover sheet.  That cover sheet will have a list of what to include with the return.  The state return has a copy of the federal return printed with it.  Be sure to sign and date the state and the federal return.  If you forget to sign, it may be returned to you for a signature.

Be sure that your federal return has been accepted.  Some users have been unable to e-file their state file after e-filing the federal.  That issue was being addressed.  If you are unable to e-file the state then use the link in this announcement to be notified when the program is working correctly.
