Question

We go married in December. My husband lived in a separate state and worked. Do we file our state taxes in both states as single or married and filing jointly in each state?

It depends on the states involved and what each of you consider to be your resident state(s) during 2019.

Typically you will file as "married filing jointly, but sometimes it is advantageous to use "married filing separately" at the state level, and some states have rules that allow a different filing status for married couples, e.g., "Married filing separately on [the same return]".

If you can post the states involved, and which are considered your resident states during 2019, your options can be better identified.
