Question

We Won't Be Able to E-file Your Return - related to California 593?

I can't seem to get TT to work for me. I keep getting an error message that I won't be able to e-file because of situation related to California tax form.

Basically it says that any withholding forms other than 1099*, W2*, 592B and 593 are not supported, AND I don't have any other forms filled out either.

It starts with TT wrongly populating remitter's name and taxID, but once I fix them by overwriting to match with my actual 593, TT starts asking me to fill out Part VI, even though there are no values in my actual 593 received from the escrow company (I am not supposed to fill out sale price there because I did not check box 3 in Part III). Once I leave that box blank during "fixing return" part, it just tells me that I can't e-file the return and constantly looping between "run smart check again" <=> "fix California return"

How do I get this resolved? (I am using TT online version).

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks!

Your California real estate withholding has to be entered on both the state and the federal return. See this TurboTax help article for future reference; it was just updated 5 days ago. Here are the steps recommended:

First, complete your state return. When you reach Take a look at California credits and taxes, select Start next to Real Estate and Other Withholding. Complete this section to enter your information.

Second, go back to your federal return.

  1. Select Federal, then Deductions & Credits.
  2. On the next screen, select Find tax breaks and answer any following questions until you reach the Your tax breaks screen.
    • Skip this step if you go directly to Let's check for tax breaks.
  3. Scroll down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid, select Show More, then select Start or Revisit next to Income taxes paid.
  4. On the next screen, select Start next to Withholding not already entered on a W-2 or 1099.
  5. Select Yes on the Do you have any tax withholding you haven't entered yet? screen. Enter your real estate withholding information under State Withholdings and select Done when finished.
  6. Return to your California state return, filling out any additional information, until you reach the Your [tax year] California taxes are ready for us to check screen. Find the Credits and taxes section and select Edit.
  7. Scroll down until you find the Real Estate and Other Withholding section and select Revisit. Enter your real estate withholding information again.

The withholding information will show up on your CA state return on Form 540 line 73 for real estate withholding and not on line 71 as income tax withholding.

If you still have trouble with the entries you already made, you can delete the forms that were created from your previous entries:

  1. Open or continue your return in TurboTax.
  2. In the left menu, select "Tax Tools" and then "Tools".
  3. In the pop-up window Tool Center, select "Delete a form".
  4. Select "Delete" next to "(form number or worksheet name" and follow the instructions that appear.
