Question

When will the new NY State Form IT-267 (Geothermal Energy System Credit) be available to file in TurboTax online?

The new NYS Geothermal Energy System credit (Form IT-267) is currently missing from TurboTax online: https://www.tax.ny.gov/pdf/current_forms/it/it267_fill_in.pdf

According to Pub. 93 of the MeF (from 11/22), https://www.tax.ny.gov/pit/efile/pub-93-ty2022.pdf

this form is supposed to be supported via e-file.

I talked to support and unfortunately the agent could not find any info on this. She suggested appending it as a PDF, but NYS will no longer allow PDF attachment of tax forms to e-filings (they are allowed for supplemental documents though). If it's unable to be supported I will have to file through other means. Please advise when an update will be available. This is a popular new credit in NYS comparable to the federal form 5695 and the existing NYS solar credit.

Thanks,

Mike

...right. I know it's not. I'm asking when/if it will be supported or if I need to pursue another filing solution.

Form IT-267 is not included in the TurboTax New York software, and it is not listed on the Other Tax Credits and Taxes Worksheet.

I’ve been looking for this too and spoke to a customer service agent about it. She told me that more forms would be available after - I believe - February 1st. So, fingers crossed…

I do have question though in the event that IT-267 doesn’t become available: what is to stop me from completing the NYS return, exporting the PDF from TurboTax without e-filing, adding in a completed IT-267, editing the NYS return PDF file to reflect the credit, and then e-filing this (amended) return independently?

@Lickface  What stops you from doing that is that the credit from Form IT-267 has to flow to Form IT-201-ATT, and from there to line 42 of Form IT-201, and it affects all the calculations on Form IT-201 below line 42. That's the entire last two pages of IT-201. That's an awful lot to change with a PDF editor, and there's too much chance of making a mistake recalculating two pages of the return by hand. And you can't e-file a PDF or a return that you've modified outside of TurboTax. You would have to file it by mail. And of course, doing what you propose would cancel the TurboTax accuracy guarantee.

I do understand the flow from 201 to 267 and back again. I’m also a graphic designer with a BA in CompSci, so I’m not too worried about PDF editing and the computations. That said, it does bare repeating the complexity of doing something like this but hand vs software.

Are yes, individuals can’t e-file. I suppose I could pay a tax professional to review and e-file on my behalf, no?

We just got off the phone with TurboTax Live Support, 1-800-4-INTUIT ([phone number removed]). We asked when New York State Form IT-267 (Geothermal Energy System Credit) would be available. The representative confirmed that the form is currently "unsupported," and there is no indication at this time that it will be. She agrees that it should be supported and has escalated the request internally at Intuit. She also stated that the more people who call directly requesting the form, the more likely they will support it. If you are looking for this form, please call Intuit and let them know!

I don't know if this helps anyone in this thread, but for what it's worth I just completed my taxes at FreeTaxUSA in less than an hour and they supported form IT-267 without any issues. In fact, my NYS tax liability went from owing $1700 to getting a $2700 refund after the form was applied... so, my advice to those looking to file an IT-267 this year is to do so with FreeTaxUSA. Federal returns are free, and NYS cost me $15.

(I do not work for FreeTaxUSA, nor am I compensated in anyway by them for this post... I'm just fed up with TurboTax's inaction and lack of answer on this issue).

I have had the same experience with FreeTaxUSA (and am also not affiliated in any way).  At this point, that platform seems the only one supporting NYS IT-267.
