Question

Where do I enter 1099-Q and 1098-T information in the Alabama state tax return? I moved mid-year so I have W-2 income in RI but education in AL.

I graduated college in Alabama in May so I have a college savings trust fund, tuition payments, and scholarship money. I don't have a W-2 for Alabama. However, I moved to Rhode Island and started a career with a W-2 at the beginning of July. The RI form let me exclude the college stuff. I can't find a place to make sure it is included in the AL taxes.

Please clarify-

What (how much) distribution and/or scholarship do you need to claim?

Did you claim this income on your Federal return?

Hi,

I claimed the income on my federal return. Here's a breakdown:

1098-T

Payments = 6k

Scholarships = 3.25k

1099-Q

Gross = 7k

Earnings = 2k

Basis = 5k

I hope that helps.

Was any of that taxable?

Looks like tuition covered everything except 4.25 of the distribution.

Did 4.25 of the distribution go towards books supplies and/or Room and Board?

In other words, if nothing was taxable (all used for education expenses) there would be no Alabama Income and no need to file an Alabama Part-Year return.
