I moved to Arizona in April and have been working and living there. My employer did not change my california address so I have been paying both Arizona and California taxes. My W2 has the info that states how much of my income was taxed by California . In which state return do I put that tax credit in ? Or how exactly do I file this?

Here are the steps for what should happen:

Only income earned while living in CA as a resident, should be taxed by CA.

  • In the federal section, on your W2 input screen, you should have one w2 with both states listed,
    1. Input CA income, ID, wages, and tax withheld
    2. select Add Another Row
    3. Input AZ income, ID, wages, and tax withheld.
  • Once yon finish your federal sections move to the state section.
  • The program moves your state income and withholdings into the state program.
  • You need to prepare your CA return first.
  • Then prepare your AZ return.

The W2 already has it split. It shows how much of my income was taxed by California and how much was taxed by Arizona. For which state do I fill out the “taxes paid to another state” portion ?
