Which states to file? - Worked in CT while a resident in NJ and now moved to AZ for a new job

In 2019, I filed a CT non-resident tax return and a NJ resident tax return since my old job was in CT and I lived in NJ. In 2020, I moved to AZ for a new job. Please confirm the below approach makes sense:

1. AZ resident return: exclude the CT wages (left with AZ income from December) and take credit for CT taxes paid.

2. CT non-resident return: same as in the past but only include the CT wages.

3. NJ non-resident tax form with zero wages since sources of the wages were either CT or AZ. I end getting refunded the NJ taxes withheld from my paychecks.

Please clarify. I’m not understanding when you moved to Arizona and when you worked in Connecticut in 2020.

If you moved from New Jersey to Arizona sometime in 2020, you would have been a part-year resident of both states and your CT income would be taxable to NJ during the period you lived and worked in CT.

In that case you would file a part-year New Jersey return and a non-resident CT return as you did in 2019. You would get a tax credit on the NJ return for CT tax.

You would file a part-year Arizona return and report only AZ income as it sounds like you had a new job and left your CT employer when you moved, so they would be no overlap of CT wages.
